What "idling" actually does
When Steam shows you as "playing" a game, two things happen behind the scenes:
- Steam credits playtime to your account (counts toward badges and stats).
- Steam rolls a chance for a trading-card drop every ~30 minutes, up to that game's drop pool (usually 5-10 cards).
Idling is just sending Steam the "I'm playing this" message without actually launching the game. The Steam network handles it; no anti-cheat involvement, no game files modified.
Three ways to idle Steam games
The right method depends on whether you value local control, a simple interface, or the ability to switch your own computer off. None is automatically best for everyone.

Idle Master is straightforward for a single account but depends on your Windows machine staying on. ArchiSteamFarm is free, open source, and highly configurable; it can run on your own computer or server, but you manage configuration, updates and uptime; some platform-specific builds include the .NET runtime. HourIdler includes a free tier for two accounts, while larger account limits and Card Farmer are paid.
Setting up hosted idling (full walkthrough)
Follow these steps. Sign-in and verification time depends on Steam and your account.
Create a free account
Go to houridler.com and click Start free. Complete signup and any required email verification. No payment card is required for Free, which includes 2 Steam accounts, up to 32 selected games each and unlimited idle hours. Signing in to HourIdler through Steam does not itself connect a hosted idling session.
Add your Steam account
On the dashboard, click + Add Account. You have two options:
- QR login (recommended). Open the Steam Mobile app, tap the QR scanner, and scan the code in your dashboard. Steam mints a session token directly - your password never leaves your device.
- Password login. Username and password. Complete any Steam Guard approval Steam requests. The password is encrypted at rest and decrypted by the service when authentication requires it; saved session tokens can expire or be revoked.
Pick games to idle
Open the account’s game settings and select owned games or eligible free-to-play titles. Free allows up to 32 selected games per account on every plan. The hosted Steam session reports selected games as active without launching game executables. This does not simulate gameplay, unlock achievements or guarantee card drops.
Tip: if you're after trading cards, pick games you still have undropped cards on. Once a game's drop pool runs dry, idling it gets you playtime but no cards - Card Farmer (any paid plan) auto-rotates away from drained games.
Click Start
That's the entire setup. Confirm the account reaches Idling rather than merely Online, and inspect the selected games. Then you can close the tab. The server keeps idling 24/7 - your PC can be off, asleep, or in a different country.
Steam hours not increasing: a checklist
- Check the account is Idling, with selected game IDs, rather than only Online. A custom status title alone does not add game hours.
- Confirm your account owns the game or has an eligible free license. Shared-library access and promotional licenses can behave differently; adding a game name alone does not prove entitlement.
- Check schedules, per-game hour goals and account limits. A completed goal or scheduled stop can end a session even if your sign-in is valid.
- Stop another idler or finish normal Steam play if it conflicts. Auto-Restart can attempt to resume afterward; inspect any Steam Guard or fresh-login requirement.
- Allow for Steam profile update delays. Compare the game's hours on Steam later, rather than treating the dashboard's session timer as proof of immediately recorded Steam playtime.
- If the status stays offline or errors repeat, contact support with the status, game ID and approximate time. Do not send passwords, Steam Guard codes or session tokens.

Limits to know before you start
Hosted idling removes the always-on PC, but it does not remove Steam's own account rules or the need to choose a provider carefully.
- One active playing session per account. Starting a game yourself interrupts the hosted session. HourIdler's Auto-Restart waits and resumes after you finish.
- Hours are not gameplay. Idling increases the playtime Steam displays; it does not unlock skill, ranks, achievements, or in-game progress.
- Card drops are finite. A game stops producing free cards when its drop pool is empty. See the AFK card-farming guide before choosing games.
- Hosted access is a trust decision. Prefer QR login when available and read how stored credentials are protected.
But what about VAC bans?
Ordinary playtime idling does not launch, inject into, or modify a VAC-protected game process. It sends Steam a "currently playing" status instead, which is fundamentally different from running cheat software. That explains the VAC distinction; it does not make every third-party service or credential-handling practice risk-free.

If you only want to idle 1-2 of your own accounts, the free tier is enough forever. Paid tiers exist for people running larger fleets or who want Card Farmer's auto-optimization.

Common questions
- Does idling count as real playtime? Yes - same as actually playing. Hours show on your profile and count toward badges.
- Can I still play normally? Yes, but not at the same time. Steam allows one session per account. If you launch a game on your own PC, the idler gets bumped off and resumes when you close it.
- Can I idle games I don't own? No. Only games in your Steam library.
